Germany School of Music Weimar
The Germany School of Music Weimar is co-operated with The List School of Music Weimar, offers a dual degree program recognized in Europe and South Korea, and is the first such program in Asia. The program curriculum and courses offered at The List School of Music Weimar are available to Kangnam University students in Korea. And upon completion of the course work at Kangnam University, students may apply for a one-year exchange program to The List School of Music Weimar. Also available are Master Classes with faculty from The List School of Music Weimar. Through the German Academic Exchange Program students may participate in the group language exchange program to Germany, receiving language training and experiences towards becoming world-class professional musicians. Division of Senior Industry Management
Kangnam University received recognition from the Ministry of Educational Science and Technology, in being awarded the Metropolitan Area University Specialized Development in Social Welfare for five consecutive years (2004-2008), fortifying its position as the leading university in professional Social Welfare training. The Senior Industry Management program has established close relational ties and partnerships with various companies and institutions offering training of skilled professionals through onsite practicum and work related practical experiences. The Senior Industry Management program will provide expertise training and knowledge in all areas related to developing a wide variety of elderly-friendly products and services, for example, housing, medical care, financial, leisure, culture, supplies among many others.
Department of Theology
Theology is the foundation of all learning and is a unifying area of study. Theology examines human existence through history and culture, as well study the natural environment, ecosystems and cosmic events, and our relationship with God.
The Department of Theology at Kangnam University endeavors to train and develop church and lay leaders in the pursuit of renewing the Korean churches and contributing to world missions. Unlike theological seminaries, this program promotes the pursuit of an “open learning” scholarship that is future oriented.
Department of Philosophy
Courses and curriculum focusing on Eastern and Western philosophy, the root of all fields of study, will provide a balanced approach in regular study and self-reflection. In addition, the skill of creative interpretation of various subject matters will be developed, while encountering a variety of Eastern and Western philosophical approaches. Each semester an opportunity will be provided, through academic exploration sessions, to put forth a balanced and comprehensive presentation of theory and practice. Also provided, is training and skills development to meeting the demand of the modern society of individuals who are capable of presenting multiple perspectives and interpretations through creative thinking.
Department of Korean Language and Literature
The Department of Korean Language and Literature endeavors to systematically research and interpret the Korean language and culture, in an effort to educate and train professionals who will be responsible for the development and preservation of the national culture and language of Korea.
The area of studies of this program includes, research, teacher training, cultural content, and creative process, towards the acquisition of general knowledge in this field. The research area of studies provides skills training in systematically researching the Korean language and literature. The teacher training area of studies provides moral qualities and practical skills training to be able to teach Korean as a national and foreign language (Korean as a Foreign/Second Language). The cultural contents area of studies looks to educate and train professionals who are capable of packaging Korean literature and culture into “content forms” through creative writing of poetry and novels, and other traditional publication media, as well as training professionals who are capable of working with the digital media.
Department of Library and Information Science
The Department of Library and Information Science will provide training to professionals who will be prepared to meet the informational demands of the Knowledge and Information Age of the 21st century. The curriculum includes courses that focus on the organization and distribution of information, as well as training in research methods in collecting, managing and utilizing a variety of information types. These courses provide the necessary foundation and training to meet the high demands of institutions and organizations that require trained professionals in library and information science. In addition, through the research of Eastern and Western electronic information types and contents, a comprehensive understanding of various information management systems and methods will be covered. Also, the storage, organization, retrieval of electronic information will be researched through the learning of theories in the classroom and practical experiences in the field.
Department of English Literature
The Department of English Literature will train professionals towards developing sensitive and creative imaginations, as encountered in the wealth of English literature, through rigorous English language training and intense instruction, in order to better understand the English language as it is related to professional knowledge and culture. The department will focus on practical courses and an innovative curriculum utilizing high-tech material and educational methods, as well as providing greater opportunities to interact with Native English Speakers.
Division of International Studies
The Division of International Studies endeavors to train and educate global professionals who will be able to meet the demands of the present era of globalization and internationalization. Courses and curriculum will provide a balance of international studies, regional area studies, foreign language training, and information skills training.
The International Relations program will train professionals who will develop a systematic understanding of global politics, economics, social phenomenon, and be able to develop effective scientifically based design policy responses in the area of international security, international political economy, international organizations and international development, and be able to compare a variety of political, economic, social systems. Opportunities will be offered to participate in the Junior United Nations Conference club, student exchange program with universities in English-speaking countries, and overseas tours of countries with central role in international relations.
The English America Studies program, in line with the flow of globalization and internationalization of the world, will train global language professionals to be fluent English speakers, as well as provide academic training and knowledge of the history and society, and cultural features, of English America countries. The courses and curriculum will provide in-depth and interesting coverage of English America countries’ history, culture, society, politics, and current events. Professionals will be trained to be proficient in the English language in order to carry out work related duties, as well as possess a broad and general knowledge of English America.
The Canadian Studies program is the very first and only university degree conferring program in Korea, therefore graduates of this major will be uniquely situated academically and professionally. The program provides a unique opportunity to participate in a joint program with the Department of International Trade, providing a variety of program choices. Exchange student programs to King’s University College, University of Western Ontario, will provide an opportunity to study in Canada, as part of the dual-degree program (2+2(3) program) or the one-year exchange student program.
The Kazakhstan Studies program is the very first university degree conferring program in the world, and was establish to meet the ever increasing demand for knowledgeable and capable professionals who are able to further economic ties and relations between Korean and Kazakhstan. Kangnam University and sister universities in Kazakhstan have in place an agreement that allows students to participate in the 2+2 dual-degree exchangeprogram, where dual degrees are conferred upon completion of the required four years of studies.
Department of International Trade
The Department of International Trade conducts systematic research of economic activities between various countries. The purpose of this major is to train professionals who are highly capable in the area of international trade, commerce, and area studies, to be well prepared to face the rapidly changing environment of the modern age of trade, openness, globalization, information society, and information technology of the 21st century. The courses and curriculum will focus on the study of theories of international commercial science, international economics, and international business, balanced with practice, providing a foundation to identify, analyze and actively cope with the rapidly changing international economic environment.
Department of General Education
The advent of our present day information society, and trend toward lifelong learning, has put increasing demands upon educators to produce diverse and innovative education material and methods. Education is a central national imperative towards improving the global competitiveness of Korea, as well as improving the quality of life of Koreans. The Department of General Education aims to provide instruction in learning professional knowledge, practical skills development, and training in use of information and media literacy. Graduates of this program are eligible for certification as Level 2 Teachers of Junior Secondary School (middle school), as well as a Life-Long Learning Teachers. In addition, double-majors can obtain course credits towards certification as Junior Secondary School Teachers. Graduates of this program can pursue careers in teaching, government, research institutes (e.g., HRD-Human Resource Development), or continue on to graduate school.
Department of Early Childhood Education
Infancy is a critical period of life during which the body, language, cognition, emotion, and social skills develop, as well as personality and human skills. This department aims to provide instruction in the theoretical underpinning of infant growth and development, and provide opportunities for field practicum, towards the goal of training experts and professionals capable of meeting the demands of present and future preschool education environments. Practicum opportunities are possible in the Kangnam University affiliated institutions, such as the Mok-Yang Child Care Center, Kangnam Social Welfare Center, Kangnam Child Care Center, Sang Rok Day Care Center, Ajou University Day Care Center, Kangnam-Gu Child Care Center, providing field and research experiences and opportunities.
Department of Primary School Special Education
Disabilities, as viewed from the special education perspective, are seen as unique qualities of the human condition, and as such this department provides training of professionals that are capable of meeting the unique needs of children with disabilities. The Department of Primary School Special Education aims to train expert educators who will be capable of innovative teaching based on established theory and practices. Also to follow the example set by Gyeongcheonaein (worship the heavens and love people), instill a sense of calling to unselfishly contribute to society and country. Full tuition deferral is available to two qualified individuals as part of an exchange program to Kumamoto University, Japan. Other international exchange and practicum programs are available to Nepal, Kenya, and other developing countries, as well as domestic programs.
Department of Junior Secondary School Special Education
There is increasing interest in the process of how to effectively integrate disabled students into society after they graduate from secondary school, allowing for a greater quality of life in adulthood. Mandatory special education for the disabled has lead to a greater demand from special education teachers. Kangnam University as been training special educational professionals for over 20 years, during which period the various programs have developed systematic curricula and training programs that provides optimal training to educators to be knowledgeable and effective junior secondary school teachers.
Department of Chinese Language and Culture
A practical approach will be offered to train Chinese specialists who will be proficient in Chinese and posses a comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture. A variety of theoretical courses are offered in combination with skills development courses with Native Chinese speaking professors, utilizing multimedia and Internet instruction, packaged in a nine-path academic roadmap and five areas of studies. Exchange agreements with prestigious Chinese universities offer the opportunity to participate in Chinese language training and exchange programs, as well as pursue dual degrees. A Chinese teacher training program is also offered. A Chinese language computer lab offers opportunities to practice Chinese through multimedia and the Internet.
Department of Practical Chinese Studies
Practical training is emphasized to prepare experts capable of working effectively in any business environment relate to China. A variety of foundation courses, incorporating interaction with native Chinese-speakers, multimedia resources, Internet, and case analyses exercises, will provide practical skill development opportunities. Also available are Chinese language training and exchange programs, leading to dual-degrees, to prestigious universities in China.
Department of Business Administration
The goals of this program is to train professionals capable of analyzing and responding to the rapidly changing business environment of modern day society, as well as instilling a sense of service to country and society. Toward these goals, the Business Administration program will provide instruction in business administration theory and methods, as well as skills in use of information technology, as expected by present day businesses and companies. Curriculum focus includes skills development associated with problems solving, decision-making, information technology, globalization, management, and communication, providing the necessary tools for graduates to succeed in the competitive environment of the digital economy of modern day society.
Department of Economics
The educational goal of the Department of Economics is to train experts in economics capable of effectively and creatively leading and responding to the rapid changes associated with the Global Age of Information of the 21st century. Expert training is offered in the area of evaluating, analyzing, and predicting the production and sales of companies, as well as understanding and applying domestic and foreign government economic policies. A particular curriculum focus is upon providing specialized knowledge and training concerning financial sector. A balance of theoretical and practical courses will be offered to train professionals to effectively respond to the rapidly growing financial sector. Graduates can apply their training in financial institutions and government agencies.
Department of Law
Professional training and instruction in the form of legal knowledge and skills is offered to proactively interact with the many changes in the legal systems of the 21st century, in addition to endeavoring to instill a sense of service to society and country. The Department of Law, in an effort to effectively train legal professionals, will offer instruction in the theoretical underpinning of various legal systems, and train these experts to apply their learning and knowledge to legal problems that may arise in society. Also, the department provides preparatory courses for those aspiring to take the Korean bar exam or continue their studies in graduate school.
Department of Public Administration
A balance of theory and practical courses is offered towards the goals of training knowledgeable and competent professional administrators who will be effective administrators in any organization. Graduates are expected to take on leadership roles in society.
Department of Real Estate
As the first four-year degree conferring Real Estate program in Korea, the goal of the program is to produce experts capable of gathering, analyzing, and utilizing information towards the profitable use of real estate, from investment analyses, management, and research. The curriculum goals of the program aims to provide foundation instruction and training in theory and methodology, specifically regulatory and legal policies associate with land development use, as well as instruction in real estate management theory and practices as applied to real estate activities. Participation in research activities provides practice hands-on experience in this area.
Department of Tax Administration
Paying taxes is an important responsibility of citizens, and encompasses rights and powers that are important to the national economy. The need for taxation professionals is on the rise. Through the learning of foundation theory and practical knowledge in the area of tax law, tax policies, tax accounting, tax administration, international taxation, and local taxation, knowledgeable and competent taxation professionals will be trained to meet the needs of businesses and government. In order to effectively navigate the myriad aspects of a nation’s tax laws and policies, instruction in effective methods of reducing taxes (e.g., tax shelters) will be offered.

In 1992, the first Gerontology and Social Welfare Program in Korea was established at Kangnam University, in response to increasing population of seniors and their lifestyle changes. This department has been pursuing research in support of improving the lifestyle, health, and social activities of the elderly. Investigation of the process of ageing and the problems associate with this process has lead to better informed and trained professionals who are capable of effectively addressing such problems. Graduates can apply for a Level 2 Social Worker Certification, and are eligible to take the Level 1 Government Exam.
Division of Computer Media Engineering
In order to train key professionals capable of responding to the rapidly evolving information society of modern society, this program aims to provide instruction in the area of computer technology, information and communication, and digital medial technology. Courses will focus on understanding the basics of computer and information technology, as well as, hardware and software development, in addition to the basic principles associated with digital media. An in-depth treatment of developing digital media applications will be offered. Opportunities will be provided to research and conduct experiments, as well as participate in industry-university co-operative projects, providing practical skills development paralleling the needs of industry. Graduates of this program will be capable of effectively responding to demands of the knowledge-based society rooted in digital media, and information and communication technology of the 21st century.
Department of Electronic Engineering
This program aims to train professionals who are capable of designing creative and innovative electronic technology through cooperative research, in line with the cooperative ties established between industry and educational institutions. Specifically, the program endeavors to faithfully reflect the needs of the business community, by providing sufficient opportunities for practical experiences in research facilities and high-tech educational environment.
Department of Industrial System Engineering
This program aims to train experts capable of applying their knowledge and skills toward the design, application, and analysis of industrial systems, whereby optimizing productivity, quality control, and management of these operating systems. Course instruction in quality control, production, information systems, ergonomics, management science, automation, among other areas of studies will provide a comprehensive and extensive knowledge base required by experts and professionals in the field.
Department of Applied Mathematics
Mathematics is utilized in a wide variety of disciples including engineering, computer and Internet technology, telecommunication, finance, insurance, marketing, to list few. The instruction of applied methodology, pure mathematical theory, and applied mathematics will inform the learning of statistics, code mathematic, numerical analysis, computational mathematics, computer applications, and other subject areas. This program aims to train and instruct experts who are capable of directly applying their learning to real world situations.
Department of Urban Planning and Engineering
Rapid economic growth has lead to the rapid deterioration of our surrounding natural environment and ecosystem, especially in urban areas where the influx of a large concentration of people has created sever overcrowding problems. The Urban Planning and Engineering Program trains professional to plan and design urban areas that harmonize economic development and the social environment, creating clean and friendly living spaces.
Department of Architectural Engineering
Architecture is more than human living space, but a creative art realized in concrete form. This program provides instruction in basic architectural design balanced with the development of artistic creativity, with course focus on construction planning, design, safety, building methods and techniques, in the construction of building structures. Also provided is instruction in designing plumbing, sewage, electrical, and humidity systems. These areas of studies will provide a balanced approach to designing structures that harmonizes humans with their environment.
Division of Fine Arts and Industrial Design
Korean and Western art is the focus of study in this major, through a combination of practical and theoretical instruction, aimed at training vibrant and creative artists. In addition, training in video art is provided through experimentation and practice. Specifically, training is provided in the use of broadcast digital camcorders, digital editing systems, camera equipment, as well as training in the utility of professional equipment such as the beam projectors, DVDs, videotapes, and monitors as output devices, are available for the production of independent films, music videos, and other artistic video productions.
- Visual Arts Design
- Visual Arts Design, in this age of mass communication, encompasses the creative process of transforming human visual information in a faithful and visually beautiful manner. This program aims to foster professional designers capable of overcoming the communication divide of the human environment and the information society, and present a uniquely Korean perspective to this process.
- Crafts Design
- The Kangnam University Crafts Design program is only one of the two such programs in Korea. Product and crafts design is covered in this program, looking to the future in researching and producing high-tech New Ceramics as well as industrial ceramics, through the balanced instruction in theory and practical skills training.

Department of Physical Education
With the aim of improving the quality of life of Koreans in leading a physically, mentally, and socially healthy lifestyle, this program will train physical education leaders, through systematic instruction of theory and practical physical education methods. Instruction in both established sports and leisure sports is covered, as well as, preventative exercises, development and leading of physical training activities, creation of healthy leisure activities and culture, including physical activity programs for the disabled, elderly, and infants. All courses and curriculum provides instruction and training to develop, implement and assess physical activity programs that will promote healthy physical well-being.
